The fact was identi ed that some farms supply- ing export abattoirs assisted in getting our exports re-instated within a short period after ASF.
SAPPO wants to once again remind our produc- ers that they are in a position to assist with appli- cations for rst-time accreditation and with annual renewals.
At present SAPPO is still refunding producers for the cost of CSF & PRRS tests. FMD has also been in- cluded to satisfy potential importing countries.
Disease surveillance
• Globally many countries use passive surveillance as a means of continuous disease monitoring.
• The pilot project that SAPPO has undertaken
with DAFF’s assistance has been successful. The project used a handful of vets to input informa- tion.
• Roll-out to other pig veterinarians is in the pro- cess of being implemented.
Harbour inspections
In 2016 the galley waste investigation was encour- aging. All harbours visited were acting responsibly and had good systems in place.
Dates for 2017: August - September.
Welfare
SANS 1478:2016 - Code for Pig Welfare (Edition 1) was published in April 2016 and is still in operation. A working committee to re-evaluate SAPPO’s
welfare code has been formed. There is concern that we need to address the time sows spend in crates and move closer to EU standards.
Residues survey
All Pork 360 farms supplying Pork 360 abattoirs are sending in monthly samples for testing.
Compensation workshop
Discussions between DAFF, NAHF and di erent livestock are ongoing.
SAPPO has made submissions on behalf of pork industry.
• Compensation would be dependent on disease
involved – i.e. di erent formulas /approaches
per disease (or species?).
• Identi cation of animals should be a pre-
requisite.
Animal Identi cation Registration and Traceability (AIRT)
DAFF is working on an AIRT system for the future. As far as pigs are concerned, presently the follow- ing ideas are being drafted: -
• Continue with registered tattoo (ear).
• Continue with group /batch ID i.e. week number.
• All imported /breeding animals ear-tagged.
Part of the AIRT will be that all farmers will prob- ably be asked to register brand /tattoo marks.
