NATIONAL PIG HEALTH REPORT - Dr Peter Evans
Noti able (exotic) diseases ASF
• Two seemingly unrelated outbreaks were iden- ti ed in May 2016, one in Schweizer-Reneke in North West, the other in Ko efontein in the Free State.
• Mr Streicher and I attended a JOC meeting in Schweizer-Reneke on 15 June 2016:
• Ipeleng is a suburb/township close to the centre of town
• Possibly the  rst cases occurred as far back as March 2016
• AHT doing PMs – initial suspicion was pneumo- nia
• Samples were sent to Onderstepoort on 27 May 2016 - diagnosis con rmed on 6 June 2016
• 623 pigs had already died and 420 pigs were culled (46 owners)
• All pork in fridges was con scated and destroyed
• All samples in surveillance area remained nega-
tive.
• Site visit to Ko efontein conducted on 17 June
2016
• Report of deaths in April. Ivomectin injected in all
pigs they could  nd among the reeds along the
river; 250 deaths occurred in May (11/5/2016)
• AHT visited on 24/5/2016, followed by SV on
25/5
• Samples submitted to OVI, which sent the re-
sults on 9/6/2016
• Quarantined but did not stamp out as compen-
sation had not been approved
• Semi-feral population along the Riet River
• FS vet services and Nature Conservation were
using helicopters to search for feral pigs along
the Riet River
• Forward tracing indicated pigs sold at auction
• Three further positive sites were identi ed
around Bloemfontein – also quarantined
• Approximately 60 pigs on all four sites
• SAPPO was facilitating buy-out and destruction

He said an unquali ed report had been received from the auditors and that the audit had been con- ducted in accordance with International Standards on Auditing.
The  nancial statements were prepared on the going concern basis and adequate resources were in place to continue with operations in the future.
The  nancial statements were APPROVED.
